Deep Water (Story in Flamingo)
The message conveyed by this story is that it is not death but the fear of death that creates terror in our mind. So we need to remove that fear of the death. The protagonist William Douglas recounts his childhood experience with water which has made him aquaphobic. The story is saga of human will power, determination and persistence. Douglas emerged victorious defeating the stark terror that used to grip him in water. His life experience shared in this chapter also takes the reader into deep realm of human mind. The issues: nature of fear, origin/source of fear ,repercussions of fear is deconstructed. In the words of president Roosevelt quoted by Douglas, ‘All we have to fear is fear itself.’
